Feline Upper Respiratory Diseases

How does a cat get this illness?
These diseases are airborne and can be transmitted from cat to cat--even without direct contact.

Will my dog/bird/rabbit catch this illness if my cat has it?
It is unlikely, though not impossible, for these diseases to be transmitted to other types of animals. It depends on the organism.

What is feline upper respiratory disease?
This condition is caused by a variety of organisms, some that are bacteria, some that are viruses. Bacterial infections are often able to be helped by antibiotics. If it is a bacterial infection the symptoms will begin to disappear within three (3) to four (4) days after antibiotic therapy begins. Viral infections are not susceptible to antibiotic therapy and must run their course. This usually takes 2 - 3 weeks.

How serious is feline upper respiratory disease?
The disease might be compared to you having a bad cold. Unless complications set in, the disease will pass without any residual ill effects. Adequate humidity, rest, and proper diet are needed.

What is the treatment for feline upper respiratory disease?
Antibiotics are sometimes given. If the condition is bacterial, antibiotics may help. If the condition is viral, antibiotics won’t help. Steam or a vaporizer can be used to decrease congestion. Good diet, which may, for a short time, include stronger smelling food (like a fish based canned food) so the cat may be stimulated to eat.

How can feline upper respiratory disease be prevented?
Since this is an airborne disease, the best prevention is to keep infected cats away from the same air supply as uninfected cats.
